The Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission has launched a survey to better understand flooding and stormwater issues affecting residents and businesses in the region.
Input provided in the survey will help identify issues, prioritize projects and secure funding for flood mitigation.
The CSPDC is seeking input from:
- Counties: Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Rockingham
- Cities: Harrisonburg, Staunton, Lexington, Waynesboro
- Towns: Broadway, Bridgewater, Dayton, Elkton, Glasgow, Goshen, Grottoes, Mount Crawford, Timberville
The survey, developed by the Berkley Group, asks respondents about flooding including property damage, road closures, loss of utilities, livestock losses and more.
The development of the Regional Flood and Stormwater Resilience Plan is partially funded by the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s community flood preparedness fund which provided a $270,000 grant.
The CSPDC provided a 10 percent grant match through a Chesapeake Bay Watershed Implementation Plan program. No match is required from localities.
Once the resilience plan is developed, localities may be eligible for construction funding from DCR to address issues identified in the document.
In addition to the survey, in-person meetings with staff from each locality are also scheduled.
The plan should be completed in the fall.
