Del. R. Steven Landes, R-Weyers Cave, Chairman of the House Education Committee, was named Chairman of the newly formed Joint Committee to Study the Future of Public Elementary and Secondary Education in the Commonwealth. House Joint Resolution 112, sponsored by Del. Landes, created the Committee.
“I look forward to working with Vice Chairman, Senator Steve Newman, and the other Committee members to ensure all Virginian students receive the quality education they deserve. This is an important step in developing a long-term approach for educational excellence in the Commonwealth,” said Landes. “I appreciated hearing from Dr. Billy K. Cannaday, Jr., President, of the Virginia Board of Education and Dr. Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction, for the Virginia Department of Education, as we work to identify ways to improve our Standards of Quality; develop the best measurements of achievement and accountability; and implement and maximize the technological tools available to improve our educational system.”
House Joint Resolution 112 established a two-year joint committee consisting of seven members of the House Committee on Education and six members of the Senate Committee on Education and Health to study the future of public elementary and secondary education in the Commonwealth. Senator Stephen Newman, R-Bedford County was named as the Committee’s Vice Chairman.
