You can see the impact. And you’re part of the impact.

“The most that they can do for a meal is maybe they can cook soup in a pot. Some of them don’t use microwaves. These are folks who are in danger of not getting any kind of nutrition,” said Lynn Harris, the director of the Staunton Senior Center, which is in “desperate need,” according to Harris, of volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers.

“We need either volunteer substitute drivers who would be able to drive on varied scheduling or people who want to commit to once a week or once or twice a month,” said Harris, whose Senior Center runs nine Meals on Wheels routes on weekdays.

The volunteer gig takes an hour to an hour and a half per day. The service is best suited to retirees and members of church and civic groups who sign up to take on a route once a week or once a month.

Volunteers pick up meals at the Senior Center, currently located at Third Presbyterian Church, 1313 Barterbrook Road, at 11 a.m.

“This a lot of times could be the only nutritious meal that they get all day. This is a way to guarantee that folks don’t fall through the cracks and don’t live on crackers and pet food,” said Harris.

To volunteer, call the Staunton Senior Center at 540.886.4634.
