A recent Riverheads High School graduate has given the reading room at the Booker T. Washington Community Center in Staunton a new lease on life.

Ashton Brower led an effort to paint the room in colors requested by the community center, solicited furniture and reupholstering, arranged for shelving to be built and launched a book drive that collected more than 2,700 books.

For her efforts, Brower has earned the Gold Award, the highest honor given by Girl Scouts of the USA.

Brower is a member of Girl Scout Senior Troop 820 of Staunton.
