Staunton Parks and Recreation plans busy weekend at Gypsy Hill Park

staunton2editsParks and Recreation departments have the power to strengthen communities, transform lives and protect the future. That’s why this year, Staunton Parks and Recreation joins cities across the country in celebrating the power of parks and recreation for the 30th anniversary of Park and Recreation Month—an annual event created by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and celebrated in July since 1985.

Staunton Parks and Recreation will celebrate Park and Recreation Month through a “Throwback Weekend” July 17 to 19, to include the following:

  • FRIDAY, JULY 17 Family Nite Flix at the Bandstand: Dirty Dancing, 9 p.m.
  • SATURDAY, JULY 18 ‘80s Throwback Day at Gypsy Hill Park Pool, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. $1 admission and a DJ at the pool spinning ‘80s music.
  • SATURDAY, JULY 18 Gypsy Food Truck Roundup, Gypsy Hill Park Bandstand area, noon to 5 p.m. Get your grub on and choose from various food trucks parked at Gypsy Hill Park. Take your pick from BBQ, burgers, southern fare and more. Live entertainment and children’s activities. Free.
  • SATURDAY, JULY 18 Illuminate 5K Run/Walk ‘80s Throwback Race at Gypsy Hill Park, 9 p.m. Light up the night as you run/walk the course in 80s gear and LED lights originating in Gypsy Hill Park and finishing at the Gypsy Hill Gym with an ‘80s dance party-Illumination Vibration, complete with DJ spinning the latest dance music mixed with your favorite ‘80s jams and plenty of LED lights and lasers to light up the evening until 10:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to race winners and creativity of attire. Race participants will receive a t-shirt, LED bracelet and LED glasses. Glow accessories will be available for purchase (while supplies last).Race entry: $20 per person until July 1. Day of race entry fee: $25 per person. All competitors must check-in by 8 p.m.
