Staunton: Parking garage repairs nearing completion

Contributors

staunton virginiaWork that began in May on both City of Staunton parking garages will soon be coming to a close.

Maintenance work on the New Street parking garage is nearly complete, with just touch-up painting and parking stall striping remaining. That work is scheduled to be completed in the next couple of weeks, depending on weather conditions. The New Street garage has remained open during repairs, with closures to areas undergoing maintenance.

The Johnson Street parking garage has been closed since early May for more extensive repairs. The City expects to reopen the garage to monthly parking customers and the general public between mid-December and mid-January, about a month and a half later than first estimated. The project has been delayed due to unforeseen site conditions resulting in necessary additional work, specifically, some additional strengthening and reinforcement of walls.

“As with most renovation and rehabilitation projects, once you start demolition, you tend to encounter some additional, unexpected repair work,” said Public Works Director Tom Sliwoski. “We also made several changes to the project, including the addition of traffic-coating on the top deck to extend the useful life of the facility, plus some painting and pressure washing, and we modified the design of the stairs leading to the top level of the parking garage.”

Rain and colder temperatures have minimally impacted the timeline as well, Sliwoski added.

Despite the additional work and minor delays, project contractor Tendon Systems, LLC is still on track to meet its contractual obligation and complete the project before mid-January.

Current total costs for both projects are an estimated $2.2 million. The City budgeted $2.7 million for repairs and maintenance work for both garages during the FY 2018 Capital Improvement Plan process.

The City expects to announce a definite reopen date for the Johnson Street parking garage in December.
