Staunton man has assault charges upgraded to second-degree murder after victim dies

A Staunton man has now been charged with second-degree murder after a child he was alleged to have assaulted died at the University of Virginia Medical Center on Monday.

Shane M. Campbell was arrested by the Staunton Police Department on Aug. 30 as the result of an investigation into the assault of a child that occurred the day before.

Campbell was initially charged with aggravated malicious wounding and felony abuse and neglect of a child.

Campbell remains incarcerated at Middle River Regional Jail.

This investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information relating to this case is asked to call the Staunton Police Department at (540) 332-3842.
