The Staunton Police Department is investigating the report of a male impersonating an employee of the City of Staunton’s Public Works Department to gain access to a residence.
The suspect claimed to need access to a home to check on the water system. The male was not wearing a uniform and did not display an identification card. After the male left the area, multiple items were discovered to be missing from the residence.
City of Staunton Public Works utility personnel will not request access to your residence. Utility employees will only come into a residence if invited by the homeowner as a public service, and all City of Staunton Public Works employees carry identification cards. If a contractor, utility worker, or other individual asks to enter your home you have the right to see their identification. If the worker refuses to provide identification and continues to ask for access to your home, shut the door immediately and call the police department.
The suspect was described as a white male in his 30s or 40s with an unknown clothing description.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call either the Staunton Police Department at 540.332.3842 or Crimestoppers at 1.800.322.2017.
