The City of Staunton is working with Mary Baldwin College to minimize the impact of high traffic in the downtown area on Wednesday, Aug. 31 for the college’s 175th anniversary and the official launch of Mary Baldwin University.
Mary Baldwin officials expect up to 1,200 guests to converge on the campus and downtown area. In an effort to avoid excessive congestion and keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible, the city is reserving approximately 97 on-street, public parking spaces for the event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Parking spaces on New, Frederick and Academy streets will be marked with temporary signs labeled “MBU Event.” Those spaces will be reserved for event attendees and for shuttles transporting event attendees from remote parking areas.
The number of reserved spaces include:
- 58 on New Street
- 29 on Frederick Street
- 10 on Academy Street
Those traveling near the campus on Aug. 31 should also be aware that the right lane on East Frederick Street alongside Mary Baldwin College’s campus will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. College shuttles will be transporting and dropping off visitors on Frederick Street near its intersection with North Coalter Street.
Motorists should expect heavy traffic near the campus throughout the day into early afternoon and use caution if traveling in that area.
