A Petersburg man who tried to elude troopers led to a pursuit that resulted in an accident between the suspect’s vehicle, a van and a patrol vehicle.

Shyhiem Romero Anderson, 27, allegedly disregarded activated lights and sirens early Monday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

VSP attempted the traffic stop at 5:22 a.m. for a traffic violation near Woods Edge Road in Chester.

The pursuit led to an accident on Interstate 95 near exit 53 in Colonial Heights.

The 2024 Audi Q7 SUV was in the far left lane on southbound I-95 and attempted to change lanes to the far right lane. The Audi, driven by Anderson, struck a van in the rear that was traveling in the right lane.

After striking the van, the SUV then struck the trooper’s patrol vehicle on the passenger side and caused both vehicles to run off the right side of the roadway into a ditch.

There were no injuries.

Anderson was arrested and charged with eluding, possession of drugs with intent to distribute while in possession of a firearm, driving while suspended, damage to a state vehicle and unauthorized use of a rental vehicle.

This incident remains under investigation.
