State Police investigates fatal Greene County crash

policecar3At approximately, 7:35 p.m. Monday, Trooper A.C. Tunnell was responded to the scene of a single-vehicle crash located in greene county. The crash occurred Oct. 18, 2014, in  the 3400 block of Amicus Road.

According to a preliminary report, a Toyota 4Runner was traveling west on Amicus Road (U.S. Route 633) when it ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, and traveled into the eastbound lane. The Toyota 4Runner then struck an embankment. A Honda SUV, traveling east on Amicus Road, struck the 4Runner causing the vehicle to spin – striking the embankment a second time. Two of the 4Runner’s occupants were ejected from the vehicle.

The Toyota’s backseat passenger, Dana R. Shifflett, 22, of Stanardsville, Va., was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the 4Runner, a 23-year-old male from Ruckersville, Va., was also ejected from the vehicle. He and the front seat passenger were transported by helicopter to UVA Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The remaining backseat passenger was taken by ambulance to UVA Medical Center. Neither the driver nor remaining passengers was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Honda SUV, Samuel C. Bishop, 38, of Stanardsville, Va., was also taken by ambulance to UVA Hospital. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The Virginia State Police Appomattox Division Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting Trooper Tunnell with the crash, which remains under investigation. Charges are pending.

The greene county Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the crash scene.
