The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA is hosting an event to help the community keep outdoor cats protected and warm as the weather turns colder.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, the shelter will host a distribution event to hand out free warming totes and food (while supplies last) for outdoor cats.

RHSPCA team members will be on hand to answer questions about its community cat program, provide guidance on best practices for caring for outdoor cats and distribute supplies to help these animals stay safe and healthy during winter.

“With colder weather approaching, it’s vital we offer resources and support so these animals, many of whom are cared for by thoughtful neighbors, can stay warm, safe and healthy,” said Madison Spiess, a development associate at RHSPCA.

Through the community cat program, outdoor and unowned cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and returned to their outdoor homes. By supporting outdoor cats in this way, the shelter helps reduce overpopulation humanely, keep cats healthier and lessen the burden on indoor shelters.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2170 Old Furnace Road in Harrisonburg. Alternative pickup for warming totes and supplies will be available at the RHSPCA front desk during regular business hours Nov. 10-14.
