Southern Environmental Law Center responds to Dominion solar announcement

AFP

southern environmental law centerToday Dominion Virginia Power announced it is planning to develop 400MW of solar power that will be operational by 2020. Dominion anticipates that these solar projects will be capable of powering 10,000 homes at peak capacity.

The following is a statement from Southern Environmental Law Center:

Angela Navarro, Staff Attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center and leader of the organization’s energy efficiency program, responded, “We’re encouraged to see Dominion taking this step to invest in clean, renewable solar energy resources.  With the price of solar dropping nearly two-thirds over the last five years, solar is proving to be a great, low-cost option for customers. Nationwide, solar energy now provides enough electricity to power 3.5 million homes and supports more than 170,000 jobs.”

Cale Jaffe, Director of the Virginia Office at the Southern Environmental Law Center added, “As Virginia works to build a new, clean energy economy, we need to keep doing more to take advantage of job-creation opportunities in the solar, offshore wind, and energy efficiency industries.”

About the Southern Environmental Law Center: The Southern Environmental Law Center is a regional nonprofit using the power of the law to protect the health and environment of the Southeast (Virginia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama).
