Southbound traffic on Route 29 will be shifted west to the permanent lane configuration on Friday night so reconstruction of the northbound lanes will begin on the 29 widening project.
The southbound traffic switch is the next phase in the project to reconstruct and widen the 1.8-mile-long section to six lanes between Route 1719 (Towncenter Drive) and Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road). Once southbound traffic is moved to the west the tie-in points for the northbound lanes will be built on the pavement where southbound traffic was traveling. In late November northbound traffic will be shifted to the pavement in the median so the existing northbound lanes can be rebuilt and a multi-use path constructed to the east of the travel lanes.
Motorists traveling south on 29 late Friday evening and early Saturday morning should anticipate brief delays due to the traffic shift. The switch should be complete by 6 a.m. and drivers using Route 29 on Saturday morning should be alert for signs and other traffic controls directing them onto the new pavement. The speed limit through the work zone is 40 mph at all times. Inclement weather Friday night will postpone the operation until early the following week.
The Route 29 widening project is one of eight Route 29 Solutions highway projects to improve safety and increase mobility along the Route 29 corridor in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
