Two early homers gave Waynesboro a big lead, and the Generals held on from there behind solid pitching from Eric Stout en route to a 5-1 win over Harrisonburg Tuesday night at Mathers Park at Kate Collins Field.
The win breaks a first-place tie in the South Division between the two. Waynesboro, 24-11 on the season, takes a one-game lead over the Turks (24-13) heading into the final week of the 2012 season.
Harrisonburg took a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Ryan Brown led the game off with a walk, and scored on a triple down the third-base line by Thomas Smith. Stout did some of his best work of the night to get out of the inning without any further damage, inducing two short popups to left field by Ryan Lee and Brian Yeung before striking out David Perkins to end the threat.
Brandon Murray led off the second for Waynesboro with his 11th homer of the season, and then Waynesboro broke the game open in the third. JoJo Woods and Bradley Noland walked, and Julian Ridings was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Jacob Hoyle hit a 1-0 pitch into the trees beyond the right-field fence for his sixth homer of the season to give Waynesboro a 1-0 lead.
Stout (4-1) cruised from there. On the night, the Butler freshman lefty gave up a run on three hits, striking out five and walking three.
Waynesboro returns to action at home Wednesday night against South Division rival Rockbridge. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
