staunton virginiaThe walls of the History Gallery at the R. R. Smith Center for History & Art will soon be adorned with dozens of 17th century, copper-engraved and beautifully hand colored maps of France – a tribute to the important influence that France has had on Virginia wine and cheese production.

Curated by Scott Ballin and hosted by the Augusta County Historical Society, the exhibit entitled ‘Vive La France’ will open August 25 and remain in the gallery until November.

The exhibition will include more than two dozen of the beautiful maps, many from the noted Blaeu Family “Grand Atlas,” with some from other noted 17th Century cartographers.  The exhibit will open with a reception in the gallery from 5 – 7 p.m. Saturday, August 25. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

Ballin is dedicating the exhibit to Lee Cochran for her support for the community and many past exhibits.

The ACHS was founded in 1964 to study, collect, preserve, publish, educate about, and promote the history of Augusta County and its communities. More information is available online at www.augustacountyhs.org.
