The Wild Geese Baroque Ensemble will present a benefit concert for the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival in Harrisonburg on Sunday, April 17, Asbury United Methodist Church, 4:00-5:00 pm, free/donations accepted to benefit the Bach Festival.
A fable will be presented about a family of Irish geese, who, missing the annual migration, attempt to find their own way south, complete with a bit of poetry and a dash of humor.
The concert, entitled “The Wild Geese Fly Away,” includes music by Handel, Telemann, Matthew Locke, Marin Marais and Giovanni Pergolesi as well as Irish airs and dances of Turlough O’Carolan. The ensemble is based in Charlottesville and includes Nancy Garlick (recorders), Susan Black (violin), Content Sablinsky (harpsichord) and Lynanne Wilson (violoncello).
The group has performed many concerts in central and western Virginia, including the Culpeper Music Society, the Orange Music Society, Barron Ridge Winery, P. Buckley Moss Art Gallery, The Coffee House Music Series at Rockfish Community Center in Nelson County, and at Eastern Mennonite University. In their hometown of Charlottesville, they have recently performed at The Bach’s Lunch Series at Christ Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, the Wednesday Music Club, Keswick Country Club and University Village.
An exciting and varied program is planned. Admission is free, and donations for the 24th annual Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, slated for June 12–19 in Harrisonburg, are welcome at the concert or online at www.emu.edu/geese.
