The Greenbrier, the classic American resort in the foothills of West Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, will once again be host this fall to The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic, September 20-21, 2014, at The Greenbrier Tennis Center. The third annual exhibition tournament will feature Tennis Hall of Fame legends Pete Sampras and John McEnroe, who will compete for their third straight year, alongside Tommy Haas, returning for his second visit, and for the first time ever at The Greenbrier, the former world #1 and US Open champion, Andy Roddick.
Building on the overwhelming success of The Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic since its debut in 2012, The Greenbrier has significantly expanded its annual tennis tournament, which now spans two days and will include three marquee matches between these four tennis legends, along with a Pro-Am. The 2014 Classic will feature two singles matches and one doubles match between four of the greatest living tennis stars in the world, who, all together, hold 22 career Grand Slam men’s singles titles and nine Grand Slam men’s doubles titles.
The 2014 Greenbrier Champions Tennis Classic will kick off on Saturday, September 20th with tennis legend John McEnroe squaring off against current tour player Tommy Haas (ranked #17 in the world), who beat Pete Sampras last year in their marquee singles match. And following that match, Sampras, who was recently named The Greenbrier’s first-ever Tennis Pro Emeritus, will take on American tennis star Andy Roddick, in his first-ever appearance at The Greenbrier. Then, on Sunday, September 21st, the “veterans,” McEnroe and Sampras, will compete against the “young guns,” Haas and Roddick, in an exciting doubles face-off.
“We are so excited to welcome Pete, John and Tommy back to The Greenbrier to continue the legacy of tennis at the resort, which dates back to the 1890s, for a new generation of guests and fans,” says Jim Justice, Chairman and Owner of The Greenbrier. “Year after year, we’ve been thrilled to introduce new star players to our Champions Tennis Classic-and the addition of Andy Roddick to this year’s roster is bound to bring it to a whole new level!”
“I’m really looking forward to my return trip to The Greenbrier this fall for the Tennis Classic, now in its third year,” says Pete Sampras, The Greenbrier’s Tennis Pro Emeritus. “John and I always have a great time during the tournament and we’re thrilled that Tommy will be able to join us once again alongside our ‘new challenger’ Andy Roddick.”
“I’m very excited to once again be part of The Greenbrier’s Champions Tennis Classic!” says Tommy Haas. “Anytime there is an event like this where I get to play against my idols is an incredible experience. Hopefully, I’ll be able to bring my family this time and get to experience the whole resort.”
“It’s really great to see The Greenbrier continue this tournament,” says John McEnroe. “It’s a beautiful resort and my wife Patty and I have a great time every time we stay there. Pete and I are especially looking forward to the doubles match this year with our newest challenger, Andy Roddick, teamed up with Tommy Haas.”
“I’m excited to visit The Greenbrier for the first time in September to play some tennis,” says Andy Roddick. “It’s a great opportunity to stay connected with the fans and I’m looking forward to playing Pete, who was always an idol of mine.”
