Matt Ryan is a Heisman Trophy candidate. Not that he can fully comprehend that he is in that position.
“As a kid and as a high-school kid, you grow up, and I loved watching college football, and I kind of idolized some of the players. And then to kind of all of the sudden be in that position and to have our team in the position that it is this year, it’s really a great thing,” said Ryan, who will lead his second-ranked Boston College team into Blacksburg Thursday night for a game with eighth-ranked Virginia Tech.
“I’ve enjoyed it – but at the same time I don’t worry too much about all of the personal accolades and that kind of stuff because I really feel, you know, if we take care of business as a team, the personal stuff will really take care of itself at the end of the year,” Ryan said today in a conference call with The SportsDominion.
Ryan, a senior, leads the ACC with 306.9 passing yards a game and is third in the conference with a 137.0 passer-efficiency rating.
More important to him is that his Eagles are unbeaten at 7-0 and on track for a shot at a BCS bid – even if there are naysayers out there who question just how good BC really is.
“We’re 7-0, and 7-0 is great – but I think we have bigger goals than just being at this point in the season. There’s still a lot of football to be played, and a lot still that we have left to accomplish. So we’re just going to take it one week at a time, and really prepare as best we can, because we’ve got a big game Thursday night against Virginia Tech,” Ryan said.
By and large, the Eagles control their own destiny as far as the ACC and the national scene is concerned. But the Boston College team is taking it one game at a time.
“As a team, we’re not really too concerned with what’s going on everywhere else,” Ryan said. “We’re really focused on our own business and what we can control. We can only win the games on our schedule. Week in and week out, we try to play as best we can and not be concerned with what people are doing on a real national stage. We just have to really focus on ourselves.
“That’s what we’re trying to do – and we’re not worried about what other people think. We’re really just concerned with ourselves and the guys in that locker room – and that’s the way we’re going to stay for the remainder of the year,” Ryan said.
