A 33-year-old man is dead after his vehicle crashed Saturday just after 12:30 p.m. in Russell County.

Jeffery A. Cantrell, 33, of Washington County, died at the scene.

According to Virginia State Police, the accident occurred at the intersection of Route 19 and Elk Garden Road.

Cantrell’s Chevrolet Impala was heading northbound on Route 19 when it went off of the right side of the road, hit an embankment and became airborne. The vehicle then overturned multiple times while crossing the intersection with Elk Garden Road.  The Impala stuck another embankment and came to rest on its top before catching fire.

Cantrell was not wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.
