route 29The closure of Route 29 early Tuesday morning has been postponed until early Thursday morning due to the rain that is forecast to continue overnight. The closure is rescheduled for early Thursday morning, weather permitting. The closure will allow Dominion to safely remove an overhead electric power line that runs along Route 29.

On Wednesday evening work will begin at 8:30 p.m. with triple lane closures on both northbound and southbound Route 29. Rio Road will also be closed to cross traffic and left turns where it crosses Route 29. Business entrances on Route 29 north and south of the intersection, and on Rio Road east and west of Route 29, will remain open and signed detours will be in place to direct traffic around the work zone.

The complete closure will begin at midnight when southbound traffic on Route 29 will be detoured onto Woodbrook Drive, then to Berkmar Drive and back to Route 29 south of Rio Road. Northbound traffic will follow a similar detour onto Berkmar Drive, then to Woodbrook Drive and back to Route 29. During the utility work Rio Road East will be closed at the Albemarle Square/Mall Drive traffic signal. Rio Road West will be open to local traffic only.

The Albemarle County Police Department will be on site to assist with traffic control during the detour. Dominion’s utility work will be complete and one lane of Route 29 in each direction will be reopened to traffic by 4 a.m. Thursday. All lanes on Route 29 and Rio Road will be reopened to traffic no later than 7 a.m.

The contractor for the Route 29 improvement projects has established a toll-free telephone number for residents to call regarding questions or issues related to those projects. Calls to the number, 844-220-5540, will be returned by Lane-Corman Joint Venture staff within one business day.
