Rockingham County: State trooper, K-9 dog injured on Interstate 81

A Virginia State Police trooper and a K-9 dog received injuries this morning in a crash on Interstate 81 northbound in Rockingham County.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:47 a.m. at the 250 mile marker.

The trooper was checking on two tractor trailers on the right shoulder of I- 81 when her vehicle was struck by a third tractor trailer that was travelling northbound.

The trooper was transported an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.  The trooper’s K-9 dog was also taken to an area veterinarian for examination.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Nakia J. Bedward, 51, of Charlotte, N.C., was charged with reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation.
