A Rockingham County man is dead after a Jeep he was driving went down an embankment and overturned on private property.

The driver of the Jeep, Richard L. Showalter, 76, of Linville, died at the scene.

Virginia State Police is investigating the single-vehicle fatal crash of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee that occurred Feb. 18 some time after 4 p.m. on Alta Vista Lane.

A passenger in the Jeep, a 73-year-old female from Linville, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center for treatment. Her name and condition has not been released.

Neither were wearing a seatbelt, according to VSP.

The crash investigation remains ongoing.
