Rockbridge County: One man, two cows dead after fatal single-vehicle accident

One man is dead and another is in serious condition after a truck with a trailer carrying two cows went off the road and overturned in Rockbridge County.

Rodney F. Unrue, 77, of Monroe, a passenger in the truck, died at the scene.

The driver of the truck, Rodney N. Layne, 81, also of Monroe, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries.

Neither of the men were wearing a seatbelt, according to Virginia State Police.

One cow died as a result of the crash. The second cow was euthanized.

The fatal single-vehicle accident in Rockbridge County occurred on Thursday at 6:57 p.m. on Route 501 (Glasgow Highway).

According to police, the 2007 Chevrolet 3500 pick-up truck was heading northbound on when the truck went off of the right side of the road, struck an embankment and then overturned.

At this point, the trailer, carrying two cows, separated, and the trailer remained on the right side of the road while the truck went off the left side of the road and into a ditch.

The crash remains under investigation.
