Rockbridge County: One dead after Jeep plunges down embankment

A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County early Saturday morning resulted in one fatality.

Daniel Lee Sanderson, 40, of Rockbridge, died at the scene.

The crash is believed to have occurred Sept. 7 at approximately 1 a.m. on I-81, one mile north of South Lee Highway, according to Virginia State Police.

A 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Sanderson ran off the right side of the roadway, down an embankment and struck several trees.

The crash remains under investigation.
