For the second time in two days, the Virginia State Police Med-Flight 1 was involved in the rescue of an injured hiker.
On Tuesday, Med-Flight 1 was requested for the rescue of an injured teenage female hiker from Devil’s Marble Yard, a remote hiking area in Rockbridge County.
The request, and subsequent rescue, came approximately 24 hours after Med-Flight 1 made a similar rescue of an injured hiker in Madison County.
Med-Flight 1, piloted by Curt Conlin and staffed by Chesterfield County firefighters Russell Horne and David Webb, flew 93 nautical miles to site. After performing a reconnaissance and reconfiguring the aircraft, the helicopter then flew to the victim, and Webb was lowered to the ground. Webb then secured the patient, and she was hoisted to Med-Flight 1.
The patient was flown to an area command post for assessment. Because the patient was stable and from the Richmond area, the decision was made to fly her back to a hospital in Central Virginia.
The crew returned to the rescue site and picked up Webb, reloaded the patient from the command post, and returned to Chesterfield.
Conlin piloted both the rescue on Monday as well as the rescue on Tuesday.
Rockbridge Fire and EMS personnel also assisted in the Tuesday rescue, which came on the 41st anniversary of the creation of Med-Flight.
