One person is dead after a crash with a tractor trailer on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County on Thursday afternoon.

Domingo Sanchez-Lopez, 23, of Roanoke, was transported to Rockbridge Community Hospital where he later died.

The accident occurred at 3:38 p.m. on I-81 southbound at the 199.6 mile-marker.

According to Virginia State Police, a Ford Super Wagon was traveling south on I-81 when the driver of a tractor trailer merged into the Ford’s travel lane. The driver of the Ford took evasive action and swerved to avoid the collision, lost control and crashed into the median, rolling over several times.

The driver of the Ford and two other passengers were injured and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sanchez-Lopez was also a passenger in the Ford. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
