Richmond senior Terry Allen tallied a double-double of 23 points and a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Richmond to an 89-64 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday night.
The game was the final tune-up in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational before the Spiders head to Las Vegas next week. Richmond (3-1) has now won three games in a row.
“I’m pleased with the win,” head coach Chris Mooney said. “We moved the ball well against the zone. We had our best defensive effort of the season as we forced some turnovers and didn’t give up nearly as many easy shots. You saw some of the strengths of our team in the second half when we pulled away.”
Allen entered the game needing just seven points to surpass 1,000 for his career, which he achieved in the first half. He becomes the 44th member of the 1,000-point club at Richmond. Along with his ninth-career double-double, Allen added five assists, one steal and another stellar night at the free throw line.
“Terry Allen has become a great player for us,” Mooney said. “I’m really proud of him and think there are a lot more points in there. He’s just so versatile and strong and competitive. He makes plays look easy when he’s finishing with contact on his body near the rim.”
T.J. Cline scored 14 points with six rebounds and five assists as he dissected the Bethune-Cookman zone defense. ShawnDre’ Jones tallied 10 points and four assists.
A quartet of Spiders reached eight points in the win, led by seniors Trey Davis and Deion Taylor. Taylor went 6-of-8 from the free throw line, while Davis hit two threes. Marshall Wood scored eight points and Jesse Pistokache scored eight in 15 minutes of play.
Bethune-Cookman was led by Jordan Potts’ 20-point effort. He had four steals, although he only shot 6-of-16 from the floor.
The Spiders shot at least 50% percent from the field for the fourth-consecutive game after going 30-of-60 tonight. UR also outrebounded the Wildcats, 48-29, with 19 second-chance points for Richmond. The Spiders held Bethune-Cookman to just 38 percent field goal shooting.
Richmond’s assist numbers continue to be outstanding with 21 assists, including five each from Cline and Allen.
The Spiders jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game, and the margin remained steady throughout the rest of the first half. Bethune-Cookman’s press and trapping zone forced a lot of outside shots and created a frenetic pace to the game. Richmond built a 40-28 lead at halftime.
In the second half, B-CU cut the lead to nine on a Josue Salaam layup, but the Spiders retaliated with a 23-5 run to go up 73-46 after free throws from Allen at the 8:03 mark.
Richmond kept the pressure on throughout the rest of the game and a three-pointer from Julius Johnson made it 88-58 with just over two minutes left. A free throw from Paul Friendshuh put the final touches on UR’s 89-64 victory.
The Spiders will travel to Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for two days of Thanksgiving games on Nov. 25 and Nov. 26 in the Las Vegas Invitational. Richmond will play nationally-ranked West Virginia on Thursday, followed by either California or San Diego State on Friday.
