Maybe we need to give RG3 the benefit of the doubt when he says he feels he’s the best quarterback in the league.
Yes, he actually said that. But some context first.
Actually, no context needed. Here’s the full quote:
“I don’t feel like I have to come out here and show anybody anything or why I’m better than this guy or better than that guy. It’s more about going out and affirming that for me, I go out and I play, I know I’m the best quarterback on this team. I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league and I have to go out and show that. Any athlete at any level, if they concede to someone else, they’re not a top competitor, they’re not trying to be the best that they can be. There’s guys in this league that have done way more than me. But, I still view myself as the best because that’s what I work toward every single day.”
Back to the benefit of the doubt. Whatever, give it to him. You know, until he goes out and stinks up the joint again, which probably happens Week 1, and if not then, Week 2.
The Redskins traded away several drafts to get Robert Griffin III with the second pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. And he had a solid rookie season, throwing for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, just five interceptions, with a 102.4 passer rating, with another 815 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, in leading Washington to the NFC East title.
His numbers have been average since: an 82.2 passer rating in 2013, and an 86.9 rating in 2014, with a total of 20 touchdowns, 18 interceptions, 4,897 passing yards, 665 rushing yards and one rushing TD over the two-year period.
Nothing really wrong there, just not second-pick-worthy numbers.
To call RG3 a bust, then, is overstating things a bit, but it’s all about context.
