Rewind-Mania | Review of the classic Magnum TA-Tully Blanchard ‘I Quit’ match

Ray Petree

This week on “Rewind Mania,” we review the epic Magnum TA-Tully Blanchard “I Quit” steel cage match from “Starrcade ‘85: The Gathering.”

This was the culmination of Magnum and Blanchard’s feud in 1985, for the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship. On July 21, 1985, Blanchard defeated Magnum for the title—setting the stage for their rematch at the third annual “Starrcade.”

Jim Crockett Promotions decided to up the ante in 1985, telecasting the event from two cities: Atlanta and Greensboro. This particular match took place in the latter, at the historic Greensboro Coliseum.

This was the first “I Quit” match in professional wrestling history, establishing the tone and tenor of the stipulation for decades to come.
