Press Conference: VMI coach Scott Wachenheim

Chris Graham

scott-wachenheim-vmiVMI football coach Scott Wachenheim talks with reporters after the Keydets’ 32-29 loss at Western Carolina.

“I was really proud of the effort the team played with and we had some freshmen step up. Daz Palmer rushing for more yards than Detrez Newsome- who would have thought that coming in- and Tyain Smith did a good job running hard and Kuony Deng on defense and Kaleb Tucker on special teams and defense. For the third week in a row, Kaleb has done a good job covering punts for us. I was really proud of how those guys stepped up and played. I thought Austin Coulling played his tail off and gave us a chance to win the game and really fought hard the entire game.”

“We just had too many turnovers and when you lose the turnover battle, it’s hard to win games. You can’t have four kicks blocked in a game and that’s tough to overcome. You got to be able to make field goals to win close ball games and extra points and we couldn’t get that done. It’s been a point of concern all year long and we work on it every week and we work on getting the ball up and work on kicking the ball on time. Obviously, we’re going to have to look at that film really hard and do something better if we’re going to have a chance to win any ball games further down the road.”
