potomac nationalsThe Potomac Nationals (65-53, 27-22) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Carolina Mudcats (25-28, 15-14) 6-5, snapping their four-game losing streak. 3B John Wooten’s two-run home run gave Potomac the lead which they would not relinquish.

P-Nats starter LHP Matthew Spann allowed a three-run home run in the second inning to C Eric Haase, giving Carolina the 3-0 lead. Those would be the only runs Spann allowed over his four-inning start. LHP Kylin Turnbull (W, 2-3) allowed two runs (one earned) over two innings to earn the win. RHP Travis Henke and RHP Gilberto Mendez (Sv, 10) locked down the final three innings by retiring nine of the ten batters they faced.

Potomac grabbed a run back in the bottom of the second on an DH Estarlin Martinez RBI-single scoring SS Stephen Perez.

Four of the runs in the five-run sixth for Potomac were charged to RHP Clayton Cook. 1B Shawn Pleffner got things going with a two-RBI double plating CF Isaac Ballou and 2B Tony Renda. Perez then scored Pleffner with a single up the middle. RHP Michael Peoples (L, 7-8) came in to relieve Cook with a one-run lead and preserve the win for Mudcats’ starter RHP Mike Clevinger who allowed a run on four hits in five innings. Wooten took the second pitch out to left field, giving the P-Nats the 6-5 lead for good.

The Potomac Nationals Baseball Network, which is accessible at www.potomacnationals.com, will broadcast the second game of a three game series against Carolina on Saturday, August 16th. Broadcast coverage will begin with the P-Nats Leadoff Show at 6:20pm in preparation for the 6:35pm start. Potomac will send RHP Ian Dickson (3-8, 5.16) to the mound while the Mudcats’ will throw RHP D.J. Brown (2-6, 4.57).
