Poll: Romney leads Obama in NC

Virginia’s border state to the south is as much a White House battleground, maybe more.

Public Policy Polling released a new poll Tuesday showing Republican Mitt Romney with a narrow 48 percent-46 percent lead over Democrat Barack Obama among North Carolina voters.

The lead may be small, but it’s significant in that it’s the first time that Romney has led in North Carolina since last fall.

PPP’s most recent poll, in April, had Obama with a five-point lead, at 49 percent-44 percent.

Romney’s gains among independents were a key to the two-month swing – with the Republican turning what had been a 51 percent-38 percent deficit into a 42 percent-41 percent lead.

Romney has also gained among self-described Democrats in the Tar Heel State, from 15 percent in April to 20 percent in June.
