A new Public Policy Polling survey of Virginia voters has the Old Dominion leaning toward re-electing President Barack Obama.

The PPP poll had Obama, a Democrat, leading Republican nominee Mitt Romney by a 51 percent-46 percent margin. Obama had led Romney in Virginia by a 49 percent-47 percent gap in a PPP poll taken last weekend.

Inside the numbers, Obama has seen a net seven-point improvement in his favorability numbers in Virginia, from a negative-three-point spread last week (48 percent favorable, 51 percent unfavorable) to a plus-four (51 percent favorable/47 percent unfavorable). Romney’s favorability has gone in the other direction – from plus-two (49 percent favorable/47 percent unfavorable) to minus-five (46 percent favorable/51 percent unfavorable).

Obama leads 57 percent-41 percent among women voters, 88 percent-8 percent among African-Americans and 53 percent-42 percent among young voters. Romney leads 50 percent-45 percent among men, 57 percent-41 percent among whites and 57 percent-41 percent among seniors.

Obama has a slight lead among independent voters – 47 percent to 45 percent.
