Poll: Hillary Clinton with commanding lead in Virginia presidential race

hillary3Virginia has gone Democratic in the past two presidential elections. It’s looking right now like Virginia Democrats are overwhelmingly going Hillary Clinton.

A new poll from Public Policy Polling has Clinton, the former First Lady, New York senator and Secretary of State, with a commanding lead in Virginia in the race for the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

The PPP poll has Clinton at 64 percent in Virginia, to 14 percent for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 8 percent for former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, 5 percent for former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, and 2 percent for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Clinton’s lead in Virginia is across the sociodemographic spectrum – she is near 80 percent among African-American voters, over 60 percent with liberals and moderates, over 60 percent with men and women, over 60 percent with young voters and seniors, and over 50 percent with whites, Latinos and middle-aged voters.

Clinton also has leads in possible general-election matchups in Virginia over all of her potential Republican challengers. Marco Rubio and Ben Carson, maybe surprisingly, give her the best tests, with those two hypothetical matchups coming in at 47-43 breakdowns. Flavor of the month GOP hopeful Donald Trump trails Clinton by 10 points in Virginia, 49-39, and Jeb Bush, who leads the Republican field in Virginia, lags behind Clinton by a 46-38 margin.
