A PETA news release sent out on Thursday is demanding that Wilson Memorial High School cancel a scheduled donkey basketball game set for Wednesday, March 10.
The game is organized as a fundraiser for the school’s After Prom Celebration, according to a news item on the school’s website.
The PETA news release reports that the organization has posted an action alert on its website asking people to contact the school’s principal to urge him to “cancel the cruel event and replace it with an activity that doesn’t involve live animals.”
“Besides putting people’s safety at risk, abusive events such as donkey basketball give students a lesson in cruelty,” said PETA Director Debbie Leahy. “Fishersville-area schools should be promoting competitions that feature only willing human participants.”
A call to the school for comment was referred to principal Doug Shifflett. Shifflett was not available for comment.
AugustaFreePress.com will follow up with Shifflett tomorrow to get his response to the call for action from PETA.
