It wasn’t until I attended my first UVA Football game, as a first-year student in the fall of 1990, and saw the UVA Pep Band in its full glory, that I realized, this place is for me.
Hard to believe the band has been gone for 22 years now.
OK, it’s not all that hard to believe.
They kept making fun of West Virginia – outhouses, co-eds in overalls, muskets, the rest.
West Virginia: can’t take a damn joke.
A documentary on the Pep Band, going by the name of, appropriately, “Pep Banned,” is set to be screened at the 2025 Virginia Film Festival.
The Sunday, Oct. 26, screening will begin at 4:45 p.m. at Culbreth Theatre on Grounds.
The documentary, the work of directors Chris Farina (“World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements”) and Bill Reifenberger, tracks the rise and fall of the Pep Band, piecing together its legacy through the accounts of former members, administrators, fans and Friend of AFP Jerry Ratcliffe.
A panel discussion follows the screening, featuring Bill Reifenberger, producer Ron Culberson, and Pep Band alumni Mike McClellan and Dave Black.
