The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Harrisonburg residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday at the parking lot of the Rockingham County Administration Building on E. Gay Street in Harrisonburg.
This is the second year that Rebecca Foster, a hair stylist from Luray has participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Her team has raised over $3,600 so far. She personally has raised over $2,400 and took part in a Community Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Luray on October 17.
“I walk for every one of my customers, family and friends who have been diagnosed or has someone in their family who has been diagnosed with this deadly disease,” said Foster. “Memories are precious, and when you have to see a loved one lose theirs right in front of you, you then realize that something has to be done to find a cure.”
Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for over 1,100 participants in Harrisonburg who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.
“Last year the Alzheimer’s Association and participants in the Walk in Harrisonburg raised $102,000,” said Sue Friedman, president & CEO of the Central and Western Virginia chapter. “This year we hope to raise $118,619.”
In addition to the 2 mile walk, participants will enjoy a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. The JMU Men’s Basketball team and JMU Sigma Kappas, a national Walk team will be walking.
Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
