Top Baltimore Orioles prospect Jackson Holliday had three hits for Triple-A Norfolk in an 8-5 Tides win at Memphis on Sunday.
Holliday (.273/.442/.471, 8 HRs, 31 RBIs at Norfolk in 2024) has reached base safely in all 10 games this month and is batting .297 (11-for-37) with six runs, six doubles, a home run, three RBI and 12 walks in July.
But because Baltimore is so stacked at the big-league level, there isn’t the rush to bring Holliday up to MLB that there was back in April, when the O’s couldn’t get consistent good play at second and third.
Now, with Jordan Westburg (.271/.318/.496, 15 HRs, 50 RBIs) an All-Star, and Jorge Mateo (.234/.274/.413, 5 HRs, 13 SBs) and Ramon Urias (.233/.304/.377, 4 HRs, 12 RBIs) at least respectable, GM Mike Elias can take his time with Holliday, the first pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.
If Holliday ends up spending the rest of the season at Triple-A, that would put him on track to the pace of development of the current American League MVP favorite, Gunnar Henderson (.286/.373/584, 28 HRs, 63 RBIs, 14 SBs), a 2019 second-round pick who didn’t get to the bigs until 2022, and even then only played 34 games, before becoming a full-time regular in 2023.
