John Jones saw an ad promoting Open Mic Night at the WTA’s Gateway, and decided to make the drive over the Blue Ridge on a foggy night to sing a couple of tunes.

He didn’t expect to be the winner of the inaugural competition opening Season Two of Open Mic Night.

“I found that the talent was incredible. A lot of really great people to listen to,” said Jones, who praised the Wayne for providing the opportunity to perform and said he plans to be back for future shows.

“I’m looking forward to performing here more,” Jones said.

Jones came out on top in audience voting among a cast of performers that included Age Before Beauty, singer/bass guitarist David Tacy and the multitalented Duffy.

The performers entertained Thursday night at the Gateway, which added the competition element to the Open Mic Night series new for Season Two.

“We’re trying to promote our local talent,” said Lorie Strother, who initiated the idea for the talent show and has been its host since its inception in 2011.

The competition aspect was added in part to give incentive to performers to come out, and also to add to the excitement for attendees.

“I’m looking forward to what the competition brings in the future,” Strother said.
