One dead, one seriously injured in motorcycle crash on I-64 in Virginia

One person is dead following a motorcycle accident Thursday evening on Interstate 64 in Alleghany County.

The driver of the motorcycle, James Douglas Pittman, 55, of Ashland, died at the scene.

His passenger was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Virginia State Police is investigating the fatal crash that occurred at 5:24 p.m. on I-64, one and a quarter mile west of Route 696.

According to VSP, the 2007 Harley Davidson was traveling west at a high rate of speed at the 20.4-mile-marker. The motorcycle passed a vehicle and then ran off the right side of the roadway striking the guardrail.

The driver and the passenger were ejected from the motorcycle.

The crash remains under investigation.
