Chris Graham

A Craigsville teen is dead after a motor-vehicle accident on Route 42 in Augusta County.

Virginia State Police were called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash shortly after 8 a.m. Friday. A 2006 Ford mustang was northbound on Route 42 when it encountered a white, older-model passenger vehicle. According to the driver of the Ford Mustang, Larry D. Sprouse, 49, of Craigsville, the white vehicle was southbound and crossed over the centerline into the northbound lane.

The Mustang swerved to the right to avoid the oncoming vehicle and ran off the right side of the road. Sprouse lost control of the Mustang, and it crossed back across the road and then ran off the left side, where it struck a tree. The impact of the crash was on the Mustang’s passenger side.

Sprouse was taken to Augusta Health for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver’s son and front-seat passenger, Carl D. Sprouse, 15, of Craigsville, died at the scene.

The driver’s daughter and back-seat passenger, Shasta Sprouse, 18, of Craigsville, was seriously injured and flown to UVa. Hospital for treatment.

All three were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation at this time.

If anyone has any information about the white, older-model passenger vehicle, then please call the Staunton Area Office at 540.885.2142.
