A hot Waynesboro offense put up runs in six of the first seven innings en route to a 14-4 pasting of New Market in the home opener for the Generals Sunday night.

“We’re going to be playing a lot of long games. We’re going to be scoring seven-plus runs a bunch this season,” said third baseman Michael Katz, a William and Mary freshman who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a first-inning run-scoring double that got the Generals on the board and a second-inning single that extended the Waynesboro lead to 4-0.

It was hard to single out anybody on the offense on a night when the Generals put up 14 runs on 17 hits. Julian Ridings and Jeb Weymouth also had three hits for Waynesboro, and leadoff hitter Bradley Noland was on base five times with two hits and three walks.

Waynesboro also hit four triples and stole six bases.

Starting pitcher Devin Smith, doing double duty as the designated hitter, had one of the triples on a 2-for-5 night on which he also got the win, going six innings and giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out eight Rebels while allowing only one base on balls.

“When you get a lead, you just pitch ahead, pitch to contact, make them put the ball in play,” said Smith (1-0).

Seth Lucio was lights out in his three innings of mopup duty en route to earning his first save of the season, holding the Rebels scoreless on one hit while notching six strikeouts.

Waynesboro returns to action on Tuesday on the road at Harrisonburg.
