Notre Dame teammates named ACC players of the week

Notre Dame senior guard Eric Atkins has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week for the second week in a row, while the Fighting Irish’s Steve Vasturia earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

ACC letters - full-colorAtkins posted his first double-double of the season and the fifth of his career with 19 points and 11 assists in Saturday’s 79-77 win over seventh-ranked Duke in Notre Dame’s first-ever ACC game. The Columbia, Md., native’s 11 assists were a season high for an Irish player. Atkins scored in double figures for the third straight game, the 10th time this season and the 59th time in his college career. Atkins notched his 500th career assist during the game and ranks seventh all-time at Notre Dame with 502 career assists. With 1,167 career points, he is the fifth player in Notre Dame history with 1,000 career points and 500 assists.  In his last two games, Atkins is averaging 24.5 points and 9.0 assists.

Vasturia, a freshman guard from Medford, N.J., scored a career-high nine points and grabbed four rebounds against Duke in 22 minutes off the bench. Vasturia made a personal-best three three-pointers on five attempts. In the last two games, Vasturia has averaged 7.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 22 minutes per contest.
