Ney enters Harrisonburg treasurer race

Retired Harrisonburg businessman Bill Ney confirmed today that he is running for the open city-treasurer job.

Ney said today that he will seek the endorsement of the Harrisonburg Democratic Committee. Two other candidates have expressed their interest in the treasurer job – Republican Penny Paul Imeson and independent Jeff Shafer.

Shafer is currently serving as the acting city treasurer.

A special election has been set for Nov. 4 to fill the unexpired term of former treasurer Rebecca Neal, who resigned on May 9 after pleading guilty to a felony count of misusing public funds.

Ney believes his 40 years of business experience and volunteering in the community will help him stand out from the other candidates. “I have helped run two family-owned clothing stores over the last four decades. My career required me to wear many hats and demanded determination, hard work and intuition,” Ney said.

For more than 30 years, Ney assisted his aunt, Pauline Ney Zindler, and cousin Leo Zindler in running the clothing store founded by his grandfather, Alfred Ney. In 2000 Ney opened the men’s wear store B. Ney’s.

Ney believes the treasurer’s office is in critical need of new leadership. “Our treasurer must be accountable to the electorate, and the position demands a leader who is responsible and reliable. I want to bring the qualities I learned in the retail business to this public office,” Ney said.

“The treasurer’s office needs to be responsive to the needs of the area, aptly lead, professionally administered and properly supervised. As city treasurer, I will collect and protect your money and provide the courteous service my neighbors deserve. The citizens of Harrisonburg will not only be my customers, but also my boss,” Ney said.
