New restaurant debuts in Downtown Harrisonburg

The new Asian-fusion restaurant in Downtown Harrisonburg, Beyond, has become an instant hit with downtown diners, according to Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance.

Since its opening on Sept. 10, word-of-mouth, has filled the restaurant every night with eager customers. Customer Matt Little, a JMU alum, described the scene, “I haven’t seen a single ad for this restaurant, but it’s already so popular! It is clearly the new hotspot for downtown.”

Classically trained chef Bobby Scheve plates each item with artistry most often seen in metropolitan eateries. From an extensive tapas menu to a sushi bar to full entrees, this restaurant offers options for every palate preference and price point. On opening night, customer Willy Thompson, said, “I was looking forward to another cultural restaurant being downtown. Beyond offers something that has been missing for a long time and their lunch menu is great for meals under $10.”

The rehabilitated space matches the menu’s creativity with modern décor, bold pieces of artwork and gallery lighting. Owners Cy Khochareun and Prasert Saesaw recognized the history of the space by preserving a wall of the former Spanky’s restaurant filled with customer graffiti. More than two hundred patrons can be seated at Beyond which boasts a main floor, loft dining area and outdoor deck. According to Khochareun, “Our goal was to take the guest’s dining experience to the next level combining diverse flavors within a modern environment.”

Eddie Bumbaugh, executive director of Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, believes that the numerous downtown restaurants compliment each other rather than compete with each other, “The Downtown Dining Alliance has worked to create a downtown dining destination which benefits everyone. We are lucky to have such diverse restaurants in our downtown.”
