A Milford woman is dead after an accident Wednesday on Route 29 in Nelson County.

Marette L. Legeer, 86, died at the scene.

Virginia State Police is investigating the fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred at 2:14 p.m. on Thomas Nelson Highway southbound at the intersection with Jackson Lane.

Legeer was headed southbound on Route 29 at Jackson Lane when she slowed her Ford Escape to a stop to speak with Virginia Department of Transportation employees who were in the median.

A 21-year-old Lynchburg resident, also traveling southbound, struck the rear of the Ford. This caused the Ford Escape to spin eventually coming to a stop facing eastbound in the right lane of Route 29, according to VSP. The second vehicle, a Honda Accord, went off of the left side of the highway and struck a guardrail.

The driver of the Honda, Maximus A. Debilzan suffered minor injuries.

Charges are pending against Debilzan, according to VSP.

The crash remains under investigation.
