Myrtle Beach blanks P-Nats, 5-0

Chris Graham

The Potomac Nationals were shut out 5-0 by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the final game of the first half.  It was the league-leading tenth time Potomac has been shut out this season. The Nationals finish the first half in second place of the Northern Division.

Myrtle Beach started the scoring in the first off of Potomac starter Adam Olbrychowski.  The lead off batter Teodoro Martinez scored on a strikeout that was dropped for a passed ball.  Martinez scored on a sac fly by Brett Nicholas to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.

Again Myrtle would score in the second inning with Christian Villanueva hitting a long solo homer to left to increase the lead to 2-0.  An RBI single from Edwin Garcia extended the lead to 3-0 in favor of Myrtle Beach.

Pelicans starter Randol Rojas was very sharp going five scoreless innings earning the win. Rojas (5-0) struck out five Nationals.

The Pelicans added two more runs in the eighth inning for insurance and beat Potomac 5-0.

The Myrtle Beach bullpen combined to toss four scoreless innings.  Zach Osbourne earned his second save of the year by getting the final four outs of the game.  Potomac left the bases loaded against Osbourne in the eighth and had them loaded with one out against him in the ninth.  But Randolph Oduber grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and the first half for the P-Nats.

Olbrychowski (2-6) took the loss giving up two earned runs in five innings.
