Mudcats get to Pena in the fifth and top Salem, 7-2

salem red soxSalem Red Sox bats were quiet for the second straight night, and the Carolina Mudcats prevailed 7-2. Salem produced just seven hits, and only two after the fifth inning.

One reason runs were tough to come by was Cody Anderson. The Carolina League All-Star was excellent again for the Mudcats, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings to earn the victory. He improved to 7-3 with the win. On the other hand, Salem starter Mickey Pena entered the fifth inning seemingly in control of his outing, but saw it quickly slip away. He allowed three runs on three hits in the frame, and was lifted after only recording one out in the inning. Matty Ott came in for Salem and gave up two additional runs. Ott did go on to pitch two more innings in which he held the Mudcats scoreless, but by then it was too late. Carolina’s fifth inning made the difference.

In total, Pena went four and one third innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, walking one, and striking out three. Pena took the loss and fell to 3-4. Ott gave up two runs in two and two thirds, and Matt Price pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Salem.

After an RBI groundout plated a run for Carolina in the first, Salem tied the contest in the third on a Henry Ramos solo shot to right field. After Carolina scored once more on a sac fly in the fourth, Salem’s Deven Marrero drove home Matt Gedman in the top of the fifth on a single. However, the Mudcats’ third rally was too much for the Red Sox to recover from; the five-run fifth broke a 2-2 tie and the score held at 7-2 for the remainder of the game.

On Sunday, these teams wrap up a four-game series (which the Mudcats lead 2-1) at 2:00 pm, with Kyle Stroup on the hill for Salem opposing Shawn Morimando.
