Alicia’s Law will double the capacity of law enforcement in Virginia to arrest online child predators. That was the message delivered yesterday at a news conference to talk up Alicia’s Law, a legislative initiative led by House Democratic Caucus chair Brian Moran this year.

Moran, who is considering a run for the 2009 Democratic Party gubernatorial nomination, was joined at the Southern Virginia Crimes Against Children Task Force news conference by Bedford County sheriff Mike Brown, television star Erik Estrada and Alicia Kozakiewicz, for whom Alicia’s Law was named.

The task force recently launched an investigation that led to the arrest of a Stuarts Draft man who now faces multiple charges related to the manufacturing and possession of child pornography and related charges

“Alicia’s Law is about arresting these predators and making sure that children don’t have to go through the same horrible experience that Alicia did,” Moran said. “By this time next year, there will be dozens more local police departments combating Internet predators. As a former prosecutor, I know that we must give law enforcement the tools to keep the streets safe – including the virtual streets on the Internet. These task forces will protect children from unspeakable crimes.”

Alicia’s Law added $1.5 million in state money for regional task forces in Southern Virginia and Northern Virginia to combat child sex predation.
